Yesterday, I had the pleasure of chaperoning a large group from Wilcox High School biology class and a small group of 6 special needs seniors to Monterey. It was a beautiful day, about 74 degree on the long bus ride up there (I highly recommend you do not take a school bus - it had no leg room!) We were quickly assigned to our vessel and headed out past a long peer of sunning sea lions.
It was a peaceful trip until we traveled beyond the break wall. It was a very windy day and the swells were really tossing us around. We just scanned the bay for almost an hour while Katie, our Nature guide, gave us facts on the wild birds, sea lions and the occasioinal otter we saw.
We finally heard that a shipping vessel, not too far away spotted a pod of 5 Orca whales. We took off, along with all the other whale watching ships for the new location. At first, we could only see an occasional splash, but we were so fortunate that the whales wanted to play. They tail splashed us, did head stands and one even floated around belly up for awhile.
We watched and chased the Orca's for almost an hour until they became board or hungry. Then they just disappeared.
We had a very chilly ride back to the wharf as the wind kicked up. We got pretty wet, but it was so worth the trip!
